Here is a hive I made using the concept of two deep brood boxes side by side instead of one on top of another. The bottom brood chamber holds 20 Dadant type frames. In the fall, I remove the #5 and #16 frame and install a solid follower board in their place. I then place a second deep hive body on top for the bees to put up stores for winter as you would with a conventional hive. This keeps the bees from clustering into an end without the ability to move up which result in dead bees from starvation. This hive has always been one of my best honey producing hives.
